Petrosains Fieldtrip

Last Wednesday had a field trip to Petrosains at KLCC. The mission is to write a report about the title "Sound & Toys". Before enter the Pertosains, we have to ride on the Dark Ride which is looks like cable car on the road. It surprises me with the environment and the sound effect they have is cool. It was kind of mysterious an able to make people really wondering what’s inside on the journey of the Dark Ride. The first attraction was the dinosaur, but the sound effect of it are not really suitable. Beside that, we went to the “Helicopter Ride”. We get inside a helicopter and the worker will sharing some information to us. While the whole machine that we are sitting inside was moving and there are sound effects that coming together. The sound effect can enhance the feeling of realistic. The interactions adding in with sound effects make more fun and interesting. On the other side, the toy couldn’t find much inside the Petrosains. There are some Lego brick toys allow visitors to create their own car or vehicles. The visitor get the experience and know the physics while playing. Quite a lot of interactive game can be found inside the Petrosains. The most interesting was the projector interactive game, it’s really grab a lot of attentions and It was a very good experience. In conclusion , Although there are still some interactions, photos and display is too old, there are some interesting new things compare to the last time I came in few years back.

Web Design2 (Project Concept Proposal)

MOOD BOARD

Executive Summary

This project is about to redesign the website for Pathlab medical group. There are main navigations, header, highlights and promotions at the current homepage. This website looks a bit boring and messy, some text is squeeze together, some text is hard to read and the sizes of margin. When I rollover the navigations, the sub link is sometime overlay the main navigation.

Users are able to find packages and promotion in this website. However, I found out that some of the latest programme/promotion is not able to find in their websites and I think that if all the packages are state with prices will be better for customers.

Pathlab is the largest Medical Testing Group in the region. Established in 1952, the Pathlab group of companies have, over the years, been providing its services to the medical fraternity and the general public in Malaysia and is now the largest medical testing group in the region. With more than 50 branches throughout Peninsular and East Malaysia, the Pathlab group of companies, have been growing in tandem with the progress of the country. There are also branches in Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand.

Their vision and mission is to become the largest private healthcare and medical testing group in Asia and be the leader in our business of providing technologically-advanced healthcare services and products to satisfy the needs of the community.

This website provide healthcare message to users, let them be more aware of their health. There are some basic knowledge of why they need screening and tips on nutrition. They provide comprehensive, reliable and accurate health screens for customers to keep their health status in check via early detection of disease.

In conclusion, the purpose of redesign the website for Pathlab is to attract more people to engage with this site and provide convenient to users at the same time have a nicer design.

Current Site’s Analysis Goal

The current client’s website was done in 2005. The overall website looks very normal and the design is lack of attractiveness. Thus, to increase the hit rate, I have to find out areas that need to be improved and redesign it.

The first problem I noticed is the usage of colors. As we know the first impression is very important, being the top medical group, their website should give users the message of healthy. When I first clicked into their site, the striking red and yellowish catch my attention but just could not give me the feeling of being healthy. The colors are too strong and hot. So, I will use cooler and brighter colors for the website that I am going to redesign.

Another problem I found is the arrangement of the content and text, size of the margin, it is quite messy. Some text was being squeeze together to fit into a space, this is hard for users to read.

Besides, Pathlab’s website is not lively. Every page they have is only header and content, do not have flash to enhance these pages. Adding in interesting and interactive elements is important not to let users feel bored. One of my client’s competitor website has a little part where users can check their BMI by typing in their weight and height. It is quite convenient and I think I should add in something similar in the redesign website such as counting calories and etc.

I also found out that my client did not update their latest promotion or packages on to their website. I had collected brochures from one of their branches, there are few latest news that cannot be found in the website such as membership programme…

Client’s Analysis

Pathlab is the largest Medical Testing Group in the region. Established in 1952, the Pathlab group of companies have, over the years, been providing its services to the medical fraternity and the general public in Malaysia and is now the largest medical testing group in the region. With more than 50 branches throughout Peninsular and East Malaysia, the Pathlab group of companies, have been growing in tandem with the progress of the country. There are also branches in Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand.

Board of directors are: Dato' DR. F.W. KAM - Founder & Executive Chairman (Ph.D. C.Chem, C.Sci, FRSC, FRACI, FIFST, FIMMM, FRSH, FCMI, FEI, FMIC, FPRM, FPRIS, FMOSTA), Dato' MARCUS K.F. KAM - Group President & CEO (BE (Hons), MSc., C.CHEM, FRACI, MRSC, MBA, AMIChemE), DATIN WONG POH KUEEN – Director (MRSH, MBIM, F. Inst. Pet., Dip. NIOA), DR. KAM LAI YIN – Director (MBBS (Uni. Syd), MBA (Stern – NYU)).

Their vision and mission is to become the largest private healthcare and medical testing group in Asia and be the leader in our business of providing technologically-advanced healthcare services and products to satisfy the needs of the community.

The unique selling point of Pathlab is they have more than 56 years of experience in this field and gain trusted from customers. Besides, the easiness accessibility because there are more than 50 Pathlab branches nationwide. And also the first fully automated laboratory in Malaysia to introduce automatic testing of clinical chemistry and immunodiagnostics, achieving maximum efficiency and consistency. Highly qualified and well-trained laboratory personnel adopt “operational excellence” to ensure customer satisfaction has become one of their selling points. Lastly, Pathlab accredited with the ISO 9001-2000 certification for quality and assurance.

Short and Long-term Site Goals

The aim of redesign website is able the website to last for few years, only changing the content (updates) but not the whole design. To have a website that can be stay for a long period, it is better to have a simple layout. I will make the site more user-friendly and easy to access (example: the rollover of navigations, search bar…).
The current Pathlab website does not look clean enough for a medical healthcare group site. Thus, I will make the site cleaner yet can clearly convey their message.

Obviously Pathlab market is aim on Asian as they only set up their branches in Asia countries. So in the website I will use only Asian faces. It is because to bring Pathlab closer with their customers, create the feeling of harmony.

I noticed they did not maintain their current website well, the site did not show the latest promotions and news. They should keep updating their promotions and news to assure customers or users to stick with them. For sure they will lose part of the customers if a website is not up-to-date.

Target Audience

Due to Pathlab is a healthcare center, the range of the target audience is wide, from old to young, single to family. But according to the workers there, they said their customers mostly are people from 18 to 40+. This group of people is more aware of their health. Probably because they are more educated, they have more knowledge on taking care their body and have financial ability.

The purpose of customers, buyers or users log in to their web is to get information they want. The site is to make customers/users to feel more convenient, they can rely on the site, and they no need to go to any of Pathlab branches just to get the information. In the website, they might want to check for packages and prices, get some basic knowledge of healthcare, eating habit. For people who do not know the location of Pathlab, the thing that they can do is to check the location or contact from the website.

To make sure they log into the web more frequently, Pathlab must keep updating the newest promotions and highlights, and put the latest content on the main page. Newsletter is also a way to keep them log into the site. Client can put their website address on their advertisements or advertise on sites/ blog/ forum and etc.
